i have a thing for you, orange (tangerine)

19 Jun

It never ceases to amaze (annoy) me that summer doesn’t really get going in Portland until after the fourth of July. While we’ve had some beautiful weather (this weekend was awesome!), you can’t count on consistent sun and warmth until after binging on hot dogs, chips, fruit platters and red/white/blue funfetti cakes. Despite (or in spite of) gloomy weather, I’ve been seriously loving anything orange/tangerine this year. I should mention it’s also one of Pantone’s colors for spring/summer 2012. I’m slightly Pantone obsessed (we have 12 mugs at my house), so good to know I’m on the right track.

Here are some of my favorite finds-

Equipment Singature Orange Blouse:

Fun fact: For a mere $19.99, I picked up a Mossimo lookalike at Target this weekend. While I’d love to buy any and all Equipment blouses, you really can’t go wrong with a good lookalike.

This blazer (via southern proper on tumblr):

Deborah Lippman’s ‘Lara’s Theme’ nail polish:

In the summer, I always seem to have some bright nail color going on. I love this one because it isn’t too overwhelming, yet it’s still fun.

J Brand’s tangerine cutoff shorts (via Bloomingdales):

J Brand is my all time favorite/go to for all things denim. Denim shorts are no exception, and these cutoff tangerine colored ones would definitely belong in my closet if I felt like forking over $158 for them (which I don’t.) Love them nonetheless!

Nike Women’s Pro Training sports bra:

Since I’m trying not to fall completely off the running wagon (operative word there being trying) since completing my half marathon, it doesn’t hurt to enjoy some workout clothes too. Nike is and has always been my go-to.

And, finally, this tangerine-colored Trina Turk pillow:

Can’t wait until I actually have space to decorate!

no case of the mondays here

Pretty excited for the week. I woke up with the sun shining through my window and I feel energized. It’s also my birthday week, so that never hurts either.

Here are some random things I’ve been loving-

This song:

Frank Ocean’s Dust. How can you not fall in love with that voice? Finding good new music is akin to opening presents on Christmas morning.

This recipe for Whole Wheat Sourdough Ciabatta:

I’m a bread addict/fiend/lover/obsessed person. I’m not necessarily a fan of regular old sandwich bread, though, but take this girl into a bakery or restaurant that serves fresh baked bread and I’m all over it. Sourdough has been a lifelong favorite, as has ciabatta, so imagine my delight when I came across a recipe for Whole Wheat Sourdough Ciabatta. YUM, definitely a must make.

My latest & greatest to do list item:

Read book one of Fifty Shades of Grey, if only to satisfy my own curiosity. Everyone seems to be talking about it and I’d love to know (for myself) what all the hype is about. Plus, I have no doubt it’ll probably be great.

These shoes:

Jimmy Choo snakeskin flats – the latest addition to my shoe wardrobe. I’ve never been a huuuge shoe person, but I just had to. Forgive me for indulging in my personal excitement for a moment.

This colorful photo I found on Tumblr (via Glitter Guide):

Doesn’t it just scream summer happiness? The orange Prada is above and beyond too. Not even remotely affordable, but fun to look at. So colorful and cheery.

This simple print:

Live in the present and enjoy things day by day. I’m so thankful to have been blessed with such a beautiful life with the most wonderful people in it.

Happy Monday!

summer foods that are healthy and taste good

2 Jun

Toeing the line between eating what *tastes* good and the *healthy* choice can be difficult (dreadful), but there are some fanfreakingtastic options that taste delicious and won’t bring about eaters’ remorse shortly thereafter.

I like to be healthy, but I almost always opt for the choices that sound best at that moment (but let’s be reasonable here people). Otherwise, you’ll end up eating it later anyway and then end up pissed you didn’t just have what you wanted in the first place.

The following are a few of my favorite summer food items that 1) taste great are  2) filling and 3) won’t leave you complaining all night long about how you “shouldn’t have eaten that.”

1. Grilled Pineapple Guacamole. This is a great recipe for it, and it’s the perfect summer appetizer. Sweet, salty and creamy all at the same time – what’s not to love? Plus, avocado is full of healthy fats (much like olive oil). Pair with some of these Food Should Taste Good multigrain tortilla chips and, voila, the perfect summer snack. OR set up a taco bar with corn tortillas, black or pinto beans, veggies, cheese and some of this deliciousness!

2. Banana Blueberry Almond Milk Smoothie. I kid you not, the first time I tried one of these (only a few months ago) you could have told me I was drinking a milkshake and I would have believed you 100%. This combination is so simple, yet so delicious. If you’re looking for a refreshing breakfast/snack/dessert that tastes like a treat, try it. I was skeptical too.

3. Banana Oat Pancakes. I am a carb fiend and love anything that could be found in a bakery/at a good brunch place, so this recipe is a healthy, homemade alternative the usual indulgence. Plus, bananas and oats are basically a can’t miss combo no matter what you do with them.

 4. Tumeric Salmon. Tumeric has numerous health benefits associated with it (antioxidant, good for the skin, this could all be bullshit and not make a difference at all but oh well it tastes good), and salmon is a no brainer for a light summer (and yum!) dinner. Here is a recipe for Salmon in a Bengali Mustard/Tumeric sauce. YUM.

5. Watermelon. My ALL-TIME FAVORITE summer snack. I will happily eat a full watermelon in one sitting if I so choose. I’m obsessed. My preferred method of eating is in cubes.

favorites this friday

1 Jun

Happy Friday! I went to San Francisco this past weekend, lucked out with beautiful weather and returned home to still have another day off work in celebration of Memorial Day. Oh, and it’s all of the sudden June, too. Huh? When did that happen, seriously?  I’ll be 24 in 13 days and that seems weird in and of itself.

Here are a few things I’ve been loving-

The Weeknd – Loft Music. Seriously can’t get over his voice. Plus he’s one of Drake’s cronies and I obviously love Drake too (and still think it’s hilariously awesome he was on Degrassi.) I’ve been listening to more music than usual this week and it’s been so clutch.

Oia Jules. This Etsy shop creates jewelry inspired by my current favorite place in the world: Oia, Santorini, Greece. I wear a host of bracelets everyday without fail, and would love to add these to my collection…

Natural Beauty. I love pictures that reflect the natural beauty of people, places and objects. I love these shots of Leighton Meester & Marilyn Monroe (unfortunately just found on Tumblr…any idea of the source?). Say no to too much makeup!

Fun sayings. Always love ’em and this is no exception-

Be yourself. Own it and go with your gut.
